In order to improve the skills of the scientific and pedagogical staff of the Kherson State Maritime Academy in 2011 in the KSMA opened a permanent graduate school and since 2016 – a doctorate. The main criteria for the effective operation of graduate school and doctoral studies is the number of dissertations defended by applicants during their studies. From 2012 to 2020, 10 graduate students of KSMA defended their dissertations at a meeting of the specialized scientific council K 67.111.01 at the Kherson State Maritime Academy, specialty 05.02.01 – materials science. From 2020 to 2021, 2 graduate students of KSMA defended their dissertations for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 132 Materials Science and 5 graduate students in 275 Transport Technology. In 2020, 1 doctoral student defended his doctoral dissertation on the specialty 05.02.01 – materials science.

However, the problem of meeting the needs of the south region and Ukraine at all in highly qualified scientific personnel in the field of technical sciences, first of all – doctors of sciences, is not solved, because conducting the research in the direction of improving the reliability of the functioning of new technological equipment, the operation and repair of maritime and river transport is a key thing for the country and the region.

KSMA team is working on the introduction of promising research work and pays considerable attention to the training of young research and pedagogical staff. Research results conducted at KSMA are regularly reported at reporting conferences, special thematic seminars, and published in the form of scientific articles, theses, textbooks and manuals. Teachers of KSMA departments take an active part in scientific activity of the institution, which is primarily due to the fact that a significant number of them work on dissertation researches and seek to defend candidate and doctoral dissertations.

At the same time, it should be noted that scientific researches and development in priority areas of science and technology are carried out on the basis of KSMA, including specialty 132 – Materials Science and 275- Transport Technologies:

• the influence of energy fields on the properties of composite materials for increasing the reliability of operation and repair of vehicles;

• maintenance and repair of transport equipment;

• development of composite materials of tribological purposes and technology of renovation works;

• increasing the efficiency of the technical condition monitoring of transport equipment.

The priority directions of the scientific school have been created and are developing in KSMA:

1. Composite materials with increased performance for the repair of transportation technologies. It operates at the Department of Transport Technologies and Mechanical Engineering of KSMA under the leadership of doctor of technical sciences, professor A.V. Buketov, who has more than 500 scientific papers in this field. Scientific works are being carried out in this direction, including within the framework of state budget topics: “Development of epoxy nanocomposites to increase the service life of maritime, river transport and military equipment” (state registration number is 0120U101567), scientific supervisor is doctor of technical sciences, prof. Buketov A.V. (period of execution: 01.2020 – 12.2022); “Development of antifriction nanocomposite materials to increase the performance of friction units of land and water transport” (state registration number is 0120U101566), scientific supervisor is candidate of technical sciences, Associate Professor Brailo M.V. (period of execution: 01.2020 – 12.2022); in 2020, representatives of the scientific school won the competition of the National Research Fund of Ukraine “Support of research of leading and young scientists” and received funding from the state budget project 2020.02 / 393 “Development of nanopolymer composites for the restoration of performance characteristics of water and land transport” (state registration number is 0120U104918), scientific supervisor – doctor of technical sciences, prof. Buketov A.V. (research has started in 2020); “Directed control of the formation of nanocarbon-containing polymer composites to increase the performance characteristics of transport” scientific supervisor – doctor of technical sciences., prof. Sapronov O.O. (the study has begun in 2021).

2. Regularities of the efficiency increasing of control of a technical condition of transport equipment. Operates at the Department of Transport Technologies and Mechanical Engineering of KSMA under the leadership of doctor of technical sciences, professor O.V. Sharko, who has more than 250 scientific papers in this field. Scientific works are being carried out in this area, including within the framework of the business contract topic “Development of ultrasonically modified epoxyplasts filled with disperse-fiber additives with increased performance characteristics” (customer – Limited Liability Company “Shipbuilding Company ‘Marina Group’ “) (state registration number is 011U008118). During 2016-2020, more than 40 scientific articles were published in this area, a significant part of which is included in international scientometric databases, 10 patents of Ukraine were obtained, 2 monographs were prepared for publication.

3. Maintenance and repair of transport equipment. Operates at the Department of Transport Technologies and Mechanical Engineering of KSMA under the leadership of doctor of technical sciences, professor of the department Sapronova O.O. and candidate of technical sciences, doctoral student, Associate Professor of the Department  of Transport Technologies and Mechanical Engineering Brailo M.V. The Academy has established a research laboratory for the use of tribological materials in engineering, which is equipped with the necessary equipment for scientific research. Scientific works are being carried out in research laboratory, including within the framework of state budget topic “Research and development of new materials and technologies for operation and repair of transportation vehicles” (state registration number is 011U002760), “Development of a decision-making system to manage the ship repair process” (state registration number is 0117U000443).

The latest material and technical base have been created in the KSMA for experimental research, as a result of which the use of known and developed methods of research of structure characteristics and dynamics of properties of systems in critical conditions of their operation is offered, which involves the study of processes of maintenance and repair of transport equipment, the improving of efficiency of control of technical condition of production transport systems of the river and sea fleet.

Creative team, mentioned above, meets all the characteristics of the scientific school, in particular:

Long-term scientific productivity, characterized by quantitative and qualitative indicators.

The breadth of the problem-thematic, geographical and chronological ranges of the scientific school.

Preservation of traditions and values of the scientific school at all stages of its formation and development.
