Scientific work

The teaching staff of Department of English Language for Deck Officers is actively engaged in scientific activities aimed at implementing innovative approaches to teaching Maritime English, as well as developing relevant research areas in this field, including: 

  • organizing active student interaction in online Maritime English learning
  • implementing and integrating modern teaching technologies to enhance learning outcomes and develop language skills 
  • developing educational materials in Maritime English 
  • designing personalized learning trajectories to increase motivation and learning outcomes

Those directions reflect the teachers’ aspiration to combine modern technologies, pedagogical innovations, and the development of students’ intercultural and professional competencies. An important component of the department work is the exchange of pedagogical experience and scientific ideas with colleagues in Ukraine and other countries. One of the key events organized and held by the department every two years is the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Modern Trends in Teaching Foreign Languages for Professional Purposes,” aimed at exchanging pedagogical experience, presenting research findings, and involving young researchers into scientific research.

At the conference on October 23, 2025 (103 participants from Ukraine, Poland, Croatia, Slovenia, Greece, Lithuania, Georgia) its participants worked in the thematic sections: linguistic and pedagogical aspects, digital technologies and online platforms, AI tools in teaching foreign languages for professional purposes.

The department is a co-organizer of the annual All-Ukrainian Student Scientific and Practical Conference “Foreign Languages in the Modern Communicative Space” at Kherson National Technical University.

The teaching staff of the department participate in academic mobility under the Erasmus+ program at maritime higher education institutions in European countries (Greece, Romania), which allows them to familiarize themselves with modern educational practices, share their own experience, and develop international contacts. 

Integral components of the department’s scientific work:

  • Supervision of student scientific research and preparation of students to participate in national and international student scientific and practical conferences
  • Publication of research results in professional periodicals of Ukraine and in journals indexed in the international scientometric databases Scopus and/or WoS Core Collection
  • Participation in national and international scientific-practical conferences, webinars, and round tables to promote integration of the department into the global and national scientific community, and implementation of innovative approaches into the educational process
  • Internships at leading higher education institutions and research centers in Ukraine and abroad, which contribute to improvement of professional competencies and implementation of modern educational technologies.
