Department of English Language for Deck Officers was established in 2007.
The courses assigned to the department:
- Maritime English (1st–4th years)
- Business English (1st–2nd years)
The main goal of the department:
- high-quality education for students pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees of higher education in accordance with the state educational standards, recommendations of the International Maritime Organization, as well as the study curricula.
The main tasks in teaching students the necessary competencies
- practical mastery of Maritime English for working on ships with multinational crews in accordance with the recommendations of Model Course 3.17 “Maritime English” of the International Maritime Organization
- development of oral communication skills in Maritime English according to the curricula of “Maritime English” for years 1-4 and “Business English” for years Im-IIm
- mastering written business communication, especially at the master’s level
- teaching on the basis of communicative and competency-based approaches in accordance with the requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW)
- application of the latest teaching methods and technologies that involve active student participation in the learning process and improve the quality of learning outcomes
The specified tasks of the department create conditions under which the department can carry out its core activities in accordance with the requirements of the shipping industry to train future seafarers who possess the competencies necessary for their practical work on cargo vessels.
Main functions of the department
- developing study programs
- ensuring consistency of the content in all forms of learning (full-time, part-time, distance), practical training sessions, guidance of students’ independent work, consultations, exams, and tests with the approved programs
- monitoring the quality of teaching, analyzing the results of mid-session and end-of-year sessions assessment
- developing and updating electronic student books, tests on LMS Moodle, methodological guidelines
- conducting webinars on modern approaches and technologies of teaching English
- holding the scientific and practical conference “Modern Trends in Teaching Foreign Languages for Professional Purposes” (once every two years)
- collaborating with the teaching staff of graduating departments (obtaining consultations, participating in expert classes, getting feedback on electronic student books etc.)
- planning advanced training and internship of the teaching staff
- involving students into scientific work by way of writing theses and participating in student scientific and practical conferences
- engaging students in extracurricular activities in English (“Hello Ukraine”, thematic discussions, etc.)
Department Development Program
- updating the department’s electronic teaching materials to provide a system of tasks based on lesson-by-lesson planning
- implementing a unified approach to systematic independent learning for part-time students and students following an individual study plan
- improving the quality indicators of the department staff
