Research Activities

The research activities of the English Language Departmen for Marine Engineers focus on the development and implementation of modern methodologies for teaching professionally oriented English to future marine engineers in accordance with international maritime education standards, including IMO requirements.

The Department’s research has a strong applied orientation and aims to integrate contemporary educational technologies and a skills-based approach, combining the development of professional (hard skills) and transferable (soft skills) competencies essential for effective communication in the international maritime environment.

Key Initiative Research Areas (2024–2026)

Skills-based approach to teaching English to future specialists in ship power engineering

This research is aimed at developing and validating an integrated methodology for teaching Maritime English that supports the development of professional communicative competence alongside social and personal skills required for shipboard operations, teamwork, and safety-related communication.

Andragogical principles of using modern educational technologies and methods of teaching Maritime English

This research focuses on effective andragogical approaches to teaching Maritime English to students with professional seagoing experience. Particular emphasis is placed on digital learning technologies and the use of the Moodle LMS.

Implementation

Research findings are implemented in the Maritime English and Business English courses through updated teaching materials, e-learning courses on the Moodle platform, enhanced assessment practices, and dissemination at academic and professional events, as well as in scientific publications.
