In order to ensure advanced training of the teaching staff of Kherson State Maritime Academy, permanent Postgraduate Department was opened in 2011 at KSMA. The main criterion proving the effective postgraduate activity is the number of theses defended by postgraduate students during their studies. From 2012 till May 2020, 8 KSMA postgraduate students defended their PhD theses in specialty 05.02.01 – Materials Science at the meeting of the Specialized Academic Board K 67.111.01 at Kherson State Maritime Academy.

However, the problem is still not solved as to the need of the southern region of Ukraine and country as a whole in academic staff with advanced degrees in engineering, first of all, Doctors of Engineering Science, since the key research area for the region and country is improving reliability of functioning of the latest technological equipment, maintenance and repair of sea and river transport means.

The KSMA staff continues the efforts to implement promising research works and pays considerable attention to the training of young academic and teaching personnel. The results of the research performed at KSMA are regularly reported at conferences and special thematic seminars and published in the form of scientific articles, theses, student books and methodological guidelines. Lecturers of the KSMA departments take active part in the scientific activity of the academy, which is primarily due to the fact that a significant number of them work on their dissertation research and seek to defend their PhD and doctoral theses.

At the same time, it should be noted that scientific research and developments in the following priority directions of science and technology, including the specialties 132 – Materials Science and 275 – Transport Technologies, are carried out at KSMA:

  • the influence of energy fields on the properties of composite materials to improve the reliability of operation and repair of transport means;
  • maintenance and repair of transport equipment;
  • development of composite materials of tribological purpose and technologies of repair works;
  • efficiency increase in control of the technical condition of transport equipment.

The following priority directions of the scientific school are created and developed at KSMA:

1. Composite materials with increased performance characteristics for repair of transport means. It is available at Department of Transport Technologies of KSMA under the supervision of D.Eng.Sc., Professor A. Buketov, who has over 450 scientific works in the specified field. In this direction, scientific works are being carried out, including those in the framework of the state budget topic «Development of epoxy nanocomposites to increase the service life of sea and river transport and military equipment» (state registration no. 0120U101567), supervised by D.Eng.Sc., Professor A. Buketov (time period: 01.2020 – 12.2022); «Development of antifriction nanocomposite materials to improve the performance of friction units of land and water transport» (state registration no. 0120U101566), supervisor PhD. Eng. Sc., Associate Professor M. Brailo (time period: 01.2020 – 12.2022); in 2020 the representatives of the scientific school won the competition of the National Research Fund of Ukraine «Support to research of leading and young scientists» and received funding from the state budget for project 2020.02/393 «Development of nanopolymer composites for the restoration of basic mechanisms and hulls of water and land transport» (state registration no. 0120U104918), research supervisor D.Eng.Sc., Professor A. Buketov (research started in 2020); «Directed control of the formation of nanocarbon-containing polymer composites to improve the performance of transport», supervisor D. Eng. Sc., Professor O. Sapronov (research started in 2021).

2. Regularities of efficiency increase in control of technical condition of transport equipment. It is available at Department of Transport Technologies of KSMA under the supervision of D.Eng.Sc., Professor O. Sharko, who has over 250 scientific works in the specified field. In this direction, scientific works are being carried out, including those in the framework of the contractual topic «Development of ultrasound-modified epoxyplastics filled with dispersed-fiber additives with increased performance characteristics» (customer – Shipbuilding Company Marina Group, LLC) (state registration no. 011U008118). During 2011-2018, over 40 scientific articles were published in this direction (the considerable part of them is included in international scientometric databases), 10 Patents of Ukraine were obtained, 2 monographs were prepared for publication.

3. Maintenance and repair of transport equipment means. It is available at Department of Transport Technologies of KSMA under the supervision of D. Eng. Sc., Professor O. Sapronov and PhD. Eng. Sc., Doctoral Candidate, Associate Professor of the Department of Transport Technologies M. Brailo. The Academy has established a research laboratory on the use of tribological materials in the equipment, which is properly equipped for scientific research. Here research works are being carried out, including those within the framework of the state budget theme «Research and development of new materials and technologies for the operation and repair of transport means» (state registration no. 011U002760), «Development of decision-making system for management of the ship repair process» (state registration no. 0117U000443).

For the purposes of experimental research, the latest facilities and resources were introduced at KSMA. As a result, it is proposed to use well-known and developed methods of studying the characteristics of the structure and dynamics of the properties of systems in critical conditions of their operation, which involves studying technological processes of maintenance and repair of transport equipment, as well as improving control efficiency of technical condition of the production of river and sea transport systems.
