Ukrainian language

The purpose of mastering the discipline in the context of training specialists in a particular specialty is to improve the level of general language training, language literacy, communicative competency of applicants, practical mastery of basics of official business, scientific, conversational styles of the Ukrainian language, which will ensure professional communication at the appropriate language level


History and Culture of Ukraine

The discipline is aimed at forming a holistic view of the historical development of the Ukrainian people and based on a new concept of Ukrainian history; acquaintance with the achievements in the field of material and spiritual culture of the peoples who lived and live on the territory of Ukrainian lands; formation of awareness of the role and place of Ukraine in world history; development of skills of practical application of historical knowledge and general competencies for the formation of an impartial attitude to other ethnic groups, individuals and their role in history and cultural process; developing a critical attitude to the analysis of historical material and one’s own view of historical phenomena and events. The discipline “History and Culture of Ukraine” is a normative cycle of general training for higher education bachelor’s degree applicants. This discipline serves as a theoretical basis for further study of such disciplines as “Philosophy” and “Psychology”


Philosophy

Today, in times of profound systemic transformations, life requires from each person the ability of conscious, intelligent orientation in the world around them. But this ability is not natural – a person must learn it and the most effective school for such training is to master the highest achievements of philosophical culture. Thus, the purpose of philosophy is to form the worldview of the individual, its improvement. Philosophy involves the study of basic categories and concepts of the discipline; formation of scientific worldview, philosophical culture of thinking and cognition; acquisition of skills of scientific and philosophical analysis and spiritual self-improvement; education of a creative personality who has a high level of culture and active life position.

To study the course, higher education applicants need basic knowledge of the history and culture of Ukraine


Higher Mathematics

The discipline “Higher Mathematics” provides the development of mathematical and logical thinking of applicants, their preparation for study of special disciplines and independent work on scientific and technical literature, mastering the basic concepts, ideas and methods of modern mathematics, the ability to use them in solving specific tasks


Physics

As a discipline, physics provides deepening of knowledge of applicants about the basic properties of matter and fields, mastering methods and techniques for obtaining reliable data on the physical properties of substances, structural materials and the dependence of their properties on changes in the environment; mastering the basic characteristics and methods of measuring mechanical, thermal, electrical, magnetic and optical properties of substances as a macro, and at the microscopic levels


Technology of Electrical Materials

Acquired knowledge, skills and abilities will be needed by higher education applicants for the use of structural materials, methods of their production and processing, evaluation of material properties, behavior of materials in operation during practical work on ships of sea and river fleets on the positions provided by the qualification characteristic


Information Technology

The discipline lays the foundations for the use of information technology in the study of the following basic disciplines, and to solve future professional problems. At the same time, this discipline promotes the development of students of higher education of logical thinking and the formation of the foundations of the scientific worldview. When teaching the discipline takes into account the peculiarities of the curriculum for training in this area, the requirements of continuity of special and higher education and the continuity of knowledge in the transition to special disciplines, as well as the latest advances in science and technology


Engineering Graphics

The discipline “Engineering Graphics” is aimed at the formation of students’ theoretical skills of constructing spatial objects on the plane and practical skills in performing and reading technical drawings; development of applicants’ spatial imagination, constructive-geometric thinking, ability to make independent decisions


Technical Measurements

Practically all electrical equipment of modern ships has a high automation level, which requires knowledge of the design and operation of electrical testing and measuring equipment, design and principles of analog and digital devices for measuring basic electrical quantities; basics and methods of measurement and processing of measurement results; rules of use and connection of devices to an electric circuit for measurement of tension, current, frequency, power; reading electrical and simple electronic circuits. Analysis of the elements of electrical installations from the technological features of electrical materials and their performance will allow competently, safely and cost-effectively use electrical materials in various devices of ship power systems to ensure reliable operation during the professional activities of future ship electrical engineer


Technical Mechanics

The general technical discipline “Technical mechanics” is taught for the purpose of preparation of higher education applicants for operation, carrying out tests, definition of working capacity of the vessel and the technological equipment; establishing knowledge, skills and competencies for the study of general technical and special disciplines, as well as the importance of providing the necessary amount of fundamental knowledge for the future master to master everything new in the field of mechanical processes and phenomena encountered in professional activities and further scientific and technical development


Ecology and Environmental Protection

The purpose of teaching the discipline “Ecology and environmental protection” in the context of training marine specialists in the speciality 271 “River and sea transport”, “Operation of ship power plants”, “Operation of ship equipment and automation” is to develop skills, knowledge and abilities of higher education in the field of protection of the marine environment during the operation of vessels in accordance with the requirements of IMO MODEL COURSE 7.01, 7.03, 7.04, 7.08, 1.38, STCW – 78


Maritime English

Marine English focuses on the formation of competence use of IMO standard phrases for communication at sea and the use of English in written and oral forms, defined by the Code for Standards for Training, Certification of seafarers and Watchkeeping (Section II, Table  A-II / I).

The discipline “Maritime English” aims to develop general maritime (1-2 semesters) and professional (3-8 semesters) communication skills. The purpose of training is to master cadets (students) in English for special purposes as a means of communication and implementation in this process of education, training and personal development of the cadet (student), including the formation of his communicative competence as a means of speaking or understanding in professional communication. Due to the specifics of the professional activities of future electricians it is necessary to study English to communicate effectively at sea with the crew and between the vessels, with port representatives, correctly understand the orders and report on actions taken, know the terminology regarding the designation of ship parts and ship equipment. Not only accident-free traffic, but also human life and environmental safety largely depend on effective communication between all representatives of the maritime industry. That is why the study of this discipline is determined by the international conventions SOLAS and STCW as a necessary condition for the formation of general professional competency of future specialists of the marine fleet


Introduction Course

The discipline familiarizes students with the future profession, types of ships and types of electrical equipment, depending on the type of ship, the type of power plants and electric gears.


Basic Safety and Labour Protection on Board

The objective of the discipline is to understand and  master the theoretical knowledge, provided for the implementation of measures and organizational approaches necessary to comply with international conventions such as: International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974, The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973, the International Convention on Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping of Seafarers, 1978 (as amended by the Manila Amendments, 2010), the International Labor Organization, 2006 Convention concerning Labor in Maritime Shipping, etc.

International Maritime Organization standards and ship security are a goal for the discipline in accordance with IMO Model Course 7.03. The study of this discipline is preceded by a course in Maritime Law. Furthermore, the discipline serves as a theoretical basis for further study of such disciplines as: “Basic safety and Labor protection basis”, “Ecology and environmental protection”, “Prevention of marine pollution”, “Rules and regulations of classification societies”


Safety of Life

The curriculum is prepared in accordance to Standards for Training and Certification of Seafarers and Watchkeeping, Section VI “Standards for Functions Related to Emergencies, Occupational Safety, Health Care and Survival”, Section A-VI / 1  requirements for familiarization, initial training and safety training for all seafarers “, section A-VI / 2″ Mandatory minimum requirements for the certification of specialists in lifeboats and rafts, duty boats and high-speed rescue boats”, section A-VI /  3 “Mandatory minimum training in modern fire fighting methods”, section A-VI / 4 “Mandatory minimum requirements for first aid and medical care”. IMO Model Sources 1.13 “Elementary medical care”, 1.19 “Personal survival techniques”, 1.20 “Fire prevention and extinguishing”, 1.21 “Personal safety and social responsibility”, 1.23 “Rescue specialist (except speedboats)”


Theory and Structure of Ship and Basics of Ship Power Engineering

The main objectives of the discipline are:

  • studying the basics of the theory and structure of the ship,
  • the theory, design and operation of ship power plant equipment,
  • understanding the processes within equipment,

assessment of technical and economic conditions of this equipment


Theoretical Basics of Electrical Engineering

The discipline “Theoretical Foundations of Electrical Engineering ” provides for the study of basic formulations, concepts, and laws of electrical and magnetic phenomena.  Phenomena of active and passive elements and electric circuits, methods of their calculation at a constant, sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal signal are considered. The phenomena of resonance and mutual induction, magnetic and nonlinear circuits, transients and their calculations by classical and operator methods are analyzed. The discipline is the foundation for studying the operation of ship electrical equipment and electronic control circuits


Electric Machines

The course is devoted to mastering the theoretical and practical aspects of working with electrical machines, including power transformers, induction motors, synchronous generators, motors and compensators, as well as generators and DC motors. Particular attention is paid to the parallel operation of transformers and synchronous generators, starting and speed control of motors, the features of different options for excitation of DC machines.

Knowledge of electrical machines operation is basic in the process of training a ship’s electrician (electro-technical officer) – a specialist who, in accordance with the requirements of the International Convention STCW-78/95/10, as well as to solve complex technical problems related to the operation of marine electrical machines, and marine power plants mainly, electric drives, control systems, as well as the technical use and maintenance of marine electrical equipment. The amount of acquired knowledge in the discipline allows to perform the technical operation of ship’s electric machines effectively; to predict the malfunction of electrical machines, to plan the maintenance and realize the necessary steps for elimination the possible failures, as well as to provide control and proper modes of their operation


Ship Electronics and Power Conversion Technology

The discipline allows students to competently apply the acquired knowledge for safe operation and maintenance of electronics and power electronics, electric gears, equipment of control systems, including knowledge of special technical type of electronic systems in the professional work on vessel as electro-technical officer according to requirements of table A-III / 6 of the International convention STCW-78


Conventions and Regulations of International Maritime Organization

The purpose of the discipline is the acquisition and understanding by the graduates of basic theoretical knowledge, provided for the measures and organizational approaches necessary to comply with the provisions of international conventions such as: International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea 1974, International Convention on  Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973, International Convention on Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping of Seafarers, 1978 (as amended by the Manila Amendments, 2010), International Labor Convention, 2006 etc.


Marine High Voltage Electrical Equipment

The objectives of the discipline “Marine High Voltage Electrical Equipment” are to prepare bachelors of ship electrical engineering with theoretical foundations of knowledge and practical skills for skilled operation of high-voltage electrical equipment and devices of ship power systems (SPS), able to competently manage, distribution and consumption of electricity on ships with high-voltage SPS


Ship Auxiliary Equipment, Cargo and Deck Machinery

The main objectives of the discipline are: studying the basics of the theory, design and operation of ship auxiliary equipment, deck and cargo mechanisms, methods for estimating the load of individual parts and their replacement over time, providing understanding of the impact of these loads on durability and operational factors and breakdowns, analyzing the causes of malfunction studying the rate of constructional parts rejection in accordance with the requirements of the Register


Theory of Automatic Control

Basic structures of control systems (principles of automatic control).  Characteristics of digital and analog control systems.  tools (methods) for describing control systems.  Typical controls (typical control laws):

P, I and D. Typical regulators (controllers): P, PI, PID.  Digital and analog regulators (controllers).

Principles of measurement and structure in the management process.

Types of sensing elements used in the control process.

Data processing (signals in automatic control systems) in the control process. Actuators used in the management process.  Digital control systems, Moore – automat, Mealy – automatic


Elements and Functional Devices of Ship Automation

The study of the discipline is aimed at the formation of competence: monitoring the operation of electrical and electronic systems, as well as control systems.  As a result of studying the discipline, students should know: the place and functions of any element of automation in a particular ship’s automatic control system; structure and physical principles of operation of ship automation elements; basic parameters and static and dynamic characteristics of ship automation elements; various types of sensors used in the control process;  structure and properties of sensors that are widely used in alarm and monitoring systems, namely: Pt-100, thermocouples, thermistors, strain gages, actuators and regulators used in the control process; basic principles of hydraulic and pneumatic drives;  structure and operation of hydraulic and pneumatic control systems;  the essence of methods to ensure economic and safe operation of ship automation elements; requirements of classification societies for their safe operation;  perspective directions of development of modern elements of ship automation.


Ship Microprocessor Systems and Computer Networks

The objective of the discipline “Ship Microprocessor Systems and Computer Networks” is to form new knowledge, skills and abilities in the sphere of automation using control systems based on the use of modern information technology for information processing by microprocessor devices, as well as to understand the need and the efficiency of microprocessor systems and computer networks in control systems.


Ship Information and Measuring Systems

Mastering the discipline allows graduates to acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for the operation of ship’s electronic devices designed to control ship’s actuators in the field of professional activity in this specialty.  The objective of the course is to form knowledge with the principles of construction, methods of work and features of technical operation of ship information and measurement systems (ISS) with the acquisition of professional skills necessary to perform the duties of a ship electrician, ship’s electronic devices intended for control of ship’s executive mechanisms in the direction of professional activity in the specified specialty


Ship Technical Means of Navigation and Communication

In the process of studying the discipline, the applicant will master the basic configurations and principles of operation of the following equipment:

1. Radars;

2. Global Navigation Satellite Systems;

3. Internal navigation systems;

4. Ship’s compasses;

5. Lags;

6. Echo sounders. The study of the discipline allows you to acquire the competencies “Maintenance and repair of bridge navigation equipment and ship communication systems” (Maintenance and repair of navigation equipment on the bridge and ship communication systems), which will perform the duties of a ship’s electrical officer on board.


Technical Operation of Marine Electrical and Electronic Equipment

The study of the discipline “Technical Operation of Marine Electrical and Electronic Equipment” is aimed at the formation of the following competencies in accordance with Model Course 7.08 Electro-Technical Officer:

Maritime Law

The objective of the discipline is to master and understand basic theoretical knowledge about the concept and system of maritime law, current issues of legal protection of the marine environment and maritime safety, study the features of contractual relations (cargo transportation, passenger transporting, marine insurance contract, etc.).


Ship Automated Electric Drives

The purpose of the discipline “Ship Automated Electric Drives” is to form in the students the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for the operation of ship’s electric machines and automated electric drives, systems designed to control ship’s actuators


Ship Automated Power Systems

Discipline is of paramount importance in the educational and professional training of ship electricians.  The vast majority of modern seagoing vessels are equipped with automated marine power plants, so their effective operation is impossible without in-depth knowledge of the discipline, which lays the foundations for the structure of ship power plant control systems, their technical use and maintenance. Monitoring the operation of electrical and electronic systems, as well as control systems and operation of generators and distribution systems – these are the main competencies for the formation of which is aimed at studying the discipline


Induction Practice

The task of educational practice is to consolidate and deepen theoretical knowledge, gain skills and practical skills in the maintenance and operation of ship electrical equipment. The trainee must acquire skills in performing mechanical and mechanical work, electrical installation and partial repair of ship electrical equipment, electrical networks, fittings, etc.
