Department of Navigation and Ship Management

Main Goal of the Department

High-quality theoretical and practical training of higher education students in accordance with the state standards of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the requirements of the National Agency for Higher Education Quality Assurance (NAQA), as well as international standards of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), strictly adhering to the requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) and Code, as amended.

The Main Tasks of the Department are:

  • Professional Competence: Developing sustainable skills in navigation, maneuvering, and ship handling under any conditions, ensuring a profound knowledge of COLREG-1972, as well as the principles of navigational watchkeeping and Bridge Resource Management (BRM).
  • Technical and Environmental Literacy: Providing knowledge on ship construction, stability, the practical use of Radar/ARPA, and modern methods of marine environmental protection in accordance with the MARPOL Convention.
  • Academic Quality: Developing up-to-date syllabi, implementing the latest achievements of maritime science, and maintaining a high educational and methodological level in line with global educational standards.
  • Personnel Development: Continuous professional development of the academic and teaching staff, stimulating research activities, and maintaining a high moral and ethical status of the department.
  • Industry Integration: Developing fruitful cooperation with maritime enterprises, shipping, and crewing companies to ensure the practical value of education.

The Main Functions of the Department are:

Educational and Methodological Activities:

  • Conducting all types of training sessions at a high professional level in two languages (the state language and English).
  • Organizing training, industrial, and pre-diploma internships (sea-going practice) provided by the curricula.
  • Continuously updating methodological support, textbooks, and study guides.

Digitalization and Simulator Training:

  • Organizing the educational process using modern technical teaching aids, primarily navigational training simulators and virtual cloud technologies.
  • Monitoring independent study through the efficient organization and management of course pages on the distance learning platform (LMS Moodle).

Quality Control and Certification:

  • Implementing midterm, semester, and final control of knowledge (specifically through computer-based testing, interactive quizzes, and online tests).

Scientific and Educational/Mentoring Work:

  • Carrying out research work according to the department’s profile and involving students in scientific activities.
  • Facilitating the creative and scientific growth of teachers (working on dissertations, participating in conferences, publishing papers, and maintaining a mentorship system for young colleagues).
  • Implementing the mentoring and upbringing process through the system of group tutors (curators) in cooperation with student self-governance.

  • Innovative Learning: Full implementation and improvement of blended learning and interactive types of education.
  • Simulator Modernization: Developing the material and technical base, integrating the latest cloud-based simulators and modern computational software into the educational process.
  • Language and Methodological Support: Creating and publishing modern core educational materials in Ukrainian and English.
  • Synchronization with Business: Continuous involvement of practicing professionals, representatives of shipowners, and international crewing companies in the educational process to adapt programs to the realities of the modern fleet.
